In the evening of 10 July 2018, the whole Thai nation, as well as so many friends of Thailand around the globe, rejoiced at the news that all 12 members of a Thai youth football team and their coach were rescued safely out of the flooded Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai province, where they had been trapped since 23 June. The success of the extremely difficult rescue operation is due to the dedication, unity, teamwork and bravery of all parties concerned, Thais and foreigners alike.
Throughout the dramatic developments, the Royal Thai Embassy has learnt about the attention and outpouring well wish and care for the trapped football team, from the Indian public. In particular, the Embassy of India in Bangkok informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand that an Indian Company with expertise in draining water and flood management, namely M/s Kirloskar Brothers Limited of Maharashtra (with subsidiaries in Thailand), was willing to offer its technical assistance and its pumps to contribute to the rescue mission. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand promptly conveyed India’s generous offer to the consideration of the Thai Ministry of Interior, and H.E. Mr. Don Pramudvinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, sent a heartfelt thank-you letter to the Honourable Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India. Later, from 5 July onward, two Indian “dewatering” engineers from M/s Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. were deployed to the Tham Luang cave to assist the rescue operation. After spending some days under medical observation at Chiang Rai’s top hospital, the boys and their coach are discharged from the hospital on 17 July.
When the rescue mission ended successfully on 10 July, the Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs of India sent a reply letter to H.E. the Thai Foreign Minister, congratulating Thailand on the success. On 17 July, H.E. Mr. Chutintorn Gongsakdi, Ambassador of Thailand to India, met with the Hon’ble External Affairs Minister of India and thanked her again for her kind gesture towards Thailand, to which the Hon’ble External Minister replied that everyone in India closely followed the situation in Tham Luang Cave in Thailand with much care, and is now glad that the rescue mission has been successful.
