On 19 June 2024, H.E. Ms. Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador of Thailand to India attended the official inauguration of Nalanda University Campus in the State of Bihar. The Ceremony was chaired by Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and witnessed the attendance of several dignitaries such as Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, Shri Nitish Kumaras, Chief Minister of Bihar, as well as other 16 Ambassadors/High Commissioners of the countries that took part in the initial establishment of the University in 2010.

Thailand has continued to support the establishment of the university. During the 4th East Asia Summit, held in Bangkok on 25 December 2009, EAS member states, including Thailand, supported the establishment of the university. Besides the financial support for the initial development of the university, Thailand also provides scholarships under the scheme “Thailand Fund for Nalanda University” for Thai nationals who wish to study in the School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religions at Nalanda University.

The new campus of Nalanda University symbolised the revival of a glorious history of an ancient civilisation and knowledge which flourished in Nalanda Temple during 5th-12th AD.
